“During the trip, I made unexpected connections to my own family history,” says a participant. “It was so relevant too and I felt a real connection to the stories and the sites.”

On Roots California Excursions, participants will explore California’s rich history through the lens of the Chinese American experience that tap into a deep universal connection of the historical experience.

Learn how the first Chinese Americans in California contributed to the state’s development as an agricultural and economic powerhouse. From establishing the shrimp and abalone industries in Monterey to inventing a technique to find gold at the bottom of the Trinity River, Chinese have fostered the early development of California as a tycoon of industry and progressive thinking. Designed and led by CCC’s Education and Engagement Director, Darin Ow-Wing, a 4th generation Chinese American with long-standing ties to California, Roots California Excursions are a lens to California’s diversity and social justice.
